The Slovak Guild of Winegrowers and Winemakers stated on Monday that it expects this year to be one of the worst in recent decades due to several factors that have brought an economically unbearable burden that could even put some of them out of business. The main factor is unfair competition in the form of cheap wine of unclear origin that has led to low prices for Slovak grapes. These low prices don't even cover the costs of growing and harvesting grapes. Furthermore, the sector is bedevilled by drought. The drought factor gives winemakers a reason to expect quality grapes, but it also leads them to believe that their harvests won't be rich.
