August 31st, 2020
Former Solidarity leader and former Polish president Lech Walesa said on Monday that the 1980 August Agreements were the greatest victory in Poland's history. He made the statement on the 40th anniversary of their signing in Gdansk, northern Poland. Sealed on August 30, 1980, in Szczecin, and on August 31 in Gdansk, the August Agreements were an accord between the rising Solidarity Union and Poland's communist authorities. They were signed in the wake of worker strikes in Gdansk and other Baltic coast locations earlier that month. The agreements contained the famous "21 postulates," which among others led to the legalisation of Solidarity.
