Situation of Polish residents in Belarus deteriorating severely - Ambassador

The situation of Poles living in Belarus has deteriorated severely in recent weeks, with individuals being arrested and schools closed in Brest, western Belarus, Poland's Ambassador to Belarus said on Wednesday. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who lost to Lukashenko in a contested presidential election in August 2020, called repressions against Poles "unacceptable." She insisted imprisoned Poles would become used as political pawns. "It cannot be ruled out that they will be a bargaining chip in the future and we do not want to let that happen," she said.
