The amendment to the Press Act sponsored by MPs Miroslav Ciz and Dusan Jarjabek (both Smer-SD) is a "muzzle bill" for the media and poses a direct threat to the freedom of speech, Parliamentary Vice-chair Lucia Duris Nicholsonova (Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) said on Thursday. Duris Nicholsonova also pointed to the timing of the legislation - shortly after information on illicit police screenings of journalists emerged. "In particular of [journalists] who were critical towards the incumbent governing coalition and were put under surveillance by individuals connected to the incumbent governing coalition," she stated.
