The ruling alliance of Fidesz and the Christian Democrats has submitted to parliament a draft political declaration marking the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of Hungary's first free parliament following the fall of communism. The declaration commemorates the restoration of popular representation with the inauguration of the free parliament on May 2, 1990, the first since Hungary's loss of national sovereignty marked by the Nazi occupation starting on March 19, 1944. It pays tribute to those who fought against the Nazi and Communist dictatorships, with special emphasis on the heroes of Hungary's failed anti-Soviet uprising of 1956, those who spearheaded the transition to democracy, and the now deceased members of the first freely-elected parliament.
