A 25-metre-tall Christmas tree from Poland, a gift to Pope Francis from the Polish Catholic Church, was erected in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican on Thursday morning. The tree, a spruce from the Romnicka Forest in northeastern Poland, weighs 1.5 tonnes. Its journey from Poland to the Vatican lasted 11 days. It will take two weeks to decorate the tree, with its lights to be lit at a special ceremony on December 7. The tree is the second from Poland to stand in St. Peter's Square. The first was offered to Polish-born Pope John Paul II by southern Poland's highlander community in 1997.
