Polish PM strongly condemns acts of intolerance on all sides

November 27th, 2017

"I strongly condemn all acts of aggression and intolerance, including those that took place in Katowice," Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said in Budapest, referring to the hanging of photos of six Polish MEPs on dummy gallows by nationalists. During Saturday's demonstration in the centre of Katowice, nationalists "hanged" six images of Polish MEPs who voted for a recent European Parliament resolution that nationalists see as betrayal of Poland. In mid-November, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the rule of law in Poland, in which it urged Warsaw to observe the fundamental rights and rule of law principles enshrined in EU treaties. The EP also started its own procedure aimed at triggering Article 7 of the EU Treaty against Poland, which could involve sanctions against the country. The six MEPs, all representing Poland's main opposition party Civic Platform, voted in favour of the resolution.
