Poland to insist Germany pay compensation for WWII damages - PM

August 22nd, 2019

Poland will demand reparation from Germany for the losses that the country suffered during World War II, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told dailies published by the media group Funke Mediengruppe. Poland has not received adequate compensation from Germany for the atrocities of World War II, Morawiecki said in an interview whose fragments were published on Wednesday on the website of the largest regional daily Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. "We have lost six million people, many more than any other country that has received vast reparations. It is not fair. It cannot be this way," the Polish prime minister said. Morawiecki did not provide the sum that Poland would expect from Germany. The amount of losses is being assessed by a special parliamentary team set up by Poland to assess the extent of reparations, Westdeutsche Allgemeine wrote adding that the team's preliminary estimation amounted to EUR 850 billion.
