On Thursday Polish F-16s began a 4-month NATO Baltic Air Policing mission over Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Poland officially took over the mission from Belgium, whose fighters patrolled the three countries' skies over the past 4 months. The Baltic Air Policing project was launched after Lithuania's, Latvia's and Estonia's NATO accession in 2004 as a safety measure for the three countries, which do not have air fighter units.
