Poland marks Cursed Soldiers National Remembrance Day

March 1st, 2019

A ceremonial roll call at the at the Pantheon of the Independence Underground Soldiers in Warsaw's Powazki Cemetery inaugurated nation-wide commemorations of the Cursed Soldiers National Remembrance Day observed on March 1. The Cursed Soldiers were underground organisations fighting against the communist regime, which seized power in 1944, after World War II. They fought with Soviet-imposed rule well into the 1950s. They were treated as outlaws by the communist authorities.
