PM appeals to teachers' union for calm

March 18th, 2019

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki appealed to teacher unions on Monday to resist "morally blackmailing" the government. In a Saturday interview with a private broadcaster, Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP) head Sławomir Broniarz said teachers may refuse to assess the students' annual performance, thereby derailing the process of their promotion to the next year. Polish teachers will start a strike on April 8 if relevant referenda approve such an action, Broniarz told PAP. ZNP is demanding a PLN 1,000 (EUR 232) monthly wage hike for teachers. The strike referenda have been carried out in schools since March 5 and will continue until March 25.
