One-third of Hungarians celebrate May 1, survey finds

May 1st, 2018

Around one-third of Hungarians take part in May 1 festivities; while young people tend to be drawn in by the entertainment on offer, the older generation typically favours the tradition that is the consumption of sausage and beer, a survey by Kutatopont released on Tuesday showed. Among the survey's respondents, altogether 32 percent said they regularly attend the Labour Day festivities, while 68 percent generally opt out, Kutatopont project manager Laura Rabcsanszki was quoted as saying. The Labour Day festivities are most popular with the 30-39 age group, of whom 48 percent said they regularly go out to celebrate May 1.
