At the end of 2017, there were 39.1 million payment cards in Poland, 582,600 more than after the first three quarters of that year, the country's central bank (NBP) has said. The NBP said that debit cards totalled 30.5 million at the end of 2017, 394,000 (or 1.3 percent) more than after the third quarter of that year. Credit cards amounted to 5.8 million at the end of 2017, 83,000 (or 1.4 percent) fewer than at the end of September 2017. In addition, the NBP noted that the number of proximity cards continues to rise, by 529,000 in the last quarter of 2017, totalling 31.1 million at the end of that period. Proximity cards are also extending their share of the Polish market, accounting for 79.6 percent at the end of 2017, up from 79.5 percent after the first three quarters of that year.
