Jozef Pilsudski played the greatest role in the 1920 war against the Bolsheviks. He formed and strengthened the borders of the Second Republic of Poland, President Andrzej Duda said on Friday at the opening of a museum commemorating the inter-war state leader. The president described Pilsudski, the mastermind of Poland's 1918-regained independence, as one of the greatest Poles in history and, along with the late Polish-born Pope John Paul II, the greatest Pole of the 20th century. President Duda underlined that Pilsudski masterminded the decisive counterattack against the Bolsheviks in August 1920, and finally won a great victory.
