Epidemic subsiding, but many still need hospital intensive care

January 15th, 2021

The Covid-19 epidemic has started slowing down in the Czech Republic, with the falling numbers of new cases and the reproduction number at 0.8, but the virus load in the population is high and its community transfer persists, Health Information and Statistics Institute (UZIS) head Ladislav Dusek said on Friday. Some 500 to 600 new patients with Covid-19 are admitted to hospitals every day, with the overall number of hospitalised patients stagnating at about 7,000. However, the number of patients in serious condition at intensive care units is about the same as when the epidemic was peaking in early November, Dusek told CTK.
