The European Commission (EC) will analyse a draft law on disciplining judges put forward by Poland's ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) in terms of its compliance with EU rules, EC spokesperson Christian Wigand said on Monday. On Dec. 12, PiS MPs filed a bill that envisages disciplinary proceedings against judges for acts or omissions that may prevent or significantly impede the functioning of the judiciary, as well as for actions undermining the status of legally appointed judges and for actions of a political nature. Wigand said that the EC is aware of the draft submitted to the Polish Sejm, lower house, and intends to examine PiS proposals especially as regards their compliance with EU law regarding judicial independence.
