The European Commission paid homage to the deceased former Polish Prime Minister Jan Olszewski on Friday. "He was a great man and an outstanding statesman," said EC spokesman Alexander Winterstein. Winterstein said at a press conference that in solidarity with the Polish government and people, EC President Jean-Claude Juncker had decided to respect the period of national mourning in Poland following the death of Jan Olszewski, who was prime minister from 1991-1992. In connection with the mourning, the flags around the EC building were flown at half-mast.
