Czechs not too keen on having children - press

August 7th, 2019

Czechs do not want to have children so much, but not for financial reasons, daily Pravo said on Wednesday, citing polling data. The Czech population is ageing and in order to avoid a gradual decline, Czech women should have more children, at least 2.1 on average, instead of the current 1.7. In an ideal case, a family should have three children, Pravo writes. In spite of high living standards in Europe, the number of childless women and those with one child only has been rising there. In the Czech Republic, a quarter of women expect beforehand to have no more than one child. The European Values Study shows that one-fifth of people aged 18-29 would like to have one child only. A study on reproduction behaviour of young people in the Czech Republic finds that only less than three-fifths of men aged between 25 and 29 years plan to have children.
