The Latin American church should defend Pope Francis and his reform efforts, Czech Catholic priest and theologian Tomas Halik told journalists before his September lecturing tour of Brazil on Thursday. The Catholic Church is in a critical moment of its history and it needs far-reaching reform, Halik said. Halik, 69, is the author of many books and essays that have been translated into 18 languages including Chinese, Korean and Turkish, and have won numerous foreign awards. Last year, Halik and Paul Zulehner, from the University of Vienna, penned an open letter defending Pope Francis. The document has been signed by 75,000 people, including 150 professors of theology from four continents, Halik said today.
