Czech supreme court softens sentence for man convicted in alcohol mafia case

June 19th, 2018

The Czech Supreme Court (NS) on Tuesday softened the sentence for Tomas Brezina, a convict in the "alcohol mafia" case who cooperated with the police during the investigation, from 6 to 3.5 years in prison, with regard to his position as a cooperating suspect. Both the defence and the plaintiff proposed to soften the sentence, citing Brezina's cooperation, which helped the police bust the gang of illegal alcohol distributors that deprived the state of billions of crowns worth of unpaid taxes.
