Czech politicians commemorate 1968 invasion

August 21st, 2019

The occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968 is one of the most important and saddest anniversaries in the country's modern history, Senate chairman Jaroslav Kubera (Civic Democrats, ODS) said at a meeting to commemorate the event today. Chamber of Deputies chairman Radek Vondracek (ANO), Czech Radio general director Rene Zavoral and Prague Mayor Zdenek Hrib (Pirates) also gave speeches on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the Soviet-led invasion, which crushed the Communist-led reform movement dubbed as Prague Spring, at a ceremony staged outside the Czech Radio seat in Prague. Politicians laid wreaths at the memorial plaque on the radio building and the national anthem was played at the end.
