Czech joining Ukraine's pro-Russian rebels tried for terrorism

March 26th, 2019

A Czech court today started dealing with the case of Erik Estu, a Czech soldier who is suspected of having committed a terrorist attack by joining the fighting in Ukraine on the side of pro-Russian rebels. Estu, a member of the paratrooper unit based in Chrudim, east Bohemia, said he had gone to Ukraine to make an excursion tour, and had himself photographed in the rebel unit's uniform and with weapons for the souvenir purpose. He stayed in Ukraine for about one month in 2015, still before joining the Czech military. Estu faces up to 20 years in prison, if found guilty.
