Czech firefighters registered 2,688 fires in the country last month, which has been the highest number recorded in July since 2006 when a present method of following the data was applied for the first time, their spokeswoman Nicole Zaoralova told CTK on Thursday. She said this might be the highest number of fires in July in a markedly longer period of time, but the previous data cannot be compared with the present ones due to a change in the statistical methods. However, the consequences of the July fires were not as tragic as in some of the previous years. Eight people died and 110 suffered injuries in the fires last month, while 20 died and 193 were injured in fires in July 2015. The fires in July 2016 caused damage of 373 million crowns, while last month the estimated damage was 207 million crowns.
