Civic Platform senator resigns party membership

June 18th, 2018

Senator Jan Filip Libicki told PAP on Monday that he had resigned his Civic Platform (PO) membership as a gesture of solidarity with three PO MPs excluded from the party following their abortion vote. On January 11, the PO board expelled three of its MPs - Marek Biernacki, Joanna Fabisiak and Jacek Tomczak - for breaking the party's voting discipline during a Sejm (lower house) vote on abortion laws. The Sejm rejected a civil bill relaxing abortion laws filed by the "Let's Save Women 2017" committee, and referred an act introducing stricter abortion laws for further processing by house committees. Most of PO voted for the liberal bill; the three mentioned MPs voted against it despite earlier calls for voting discipline by the party's caucus.
