Next year, the US plans to conduct the biggest military exercise of its type in 25 years, transferring forces across the Atlantic to Poland and the Baltic states. The 'Defender 2020' exercise will involve 16 other NATO member states. The aim of 'Defender 2020' is to practise the relocation of large military units across the Atlantic to Europe, where Germany will act as a logistic hub for the further eastward deployment to Poland and the Baltic states. The manoeuvres are intended to ensure that the appropriate procedures operate in a crisis situation, according to a German Ministry of Defence letter to the parliamentary groups on the Bundestag's defence committee. The exercise will involve 20,000 US troops between February and May 2020.
