Although Poland has made significant progress in improving the treatment of people denied liberty, much still remains to be done, the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT) said on Friday, after reviewing Polish prisons, detention facilities and institutions for the mentally ill. "The government should ... make greater efforts to ensure the possibility of immediate access to fundamental rights", the subcommittee's report said.
