Over 26,000 people have signed a petition in defence of a cross on a memorial to Polish-born Pope Saint John Paul II in Ploermel, France, whose removal has been ordained by the French Council of State, the country's highest administrative court. The petition is addressed to the European Parliament. The petition states that the cross is a reminder of Europe's Christian roots, and adds that any attempts to eliminate it from the public domain cut Europe off from its origins. Campaigns in support of the cross are under way on social media.
