British retail chain Tesco has been regularly closing down its loss-making stores and selling its assets in Poland, the daily Gazeta Wyborcza wrote on Monday. Last week, development company Echo Investment said it was buying three outlets from Tesco in three Polish cities, western Poznan, central Lodz and southern Krakow, which is also the seat of the Polish branch of the British giant. According to the daily, the chain is being sold "piece by piece," because it is too large to sell to an investor or any other commercial network in the country. What cannot be sold is being shut down, the newspaper added. According to data cited by Gazeta Wyborcza, in 2019, Tesco shut down 48 stores. It still runs 331 supermarkets and hypermarkets.
