Big supermarket chains will still have to donate part of their unsold goods to food banks as the Constitutional Court declined the proposal of a senator group headed by Ivo Valenta (for the Freeholder Party) to abolish the obligation, calling it a forced gift or a specific food tax. The court said it was neither an unconstitutional infringement of the ownership rights, nor a violation of the right to do business. It called the obligation a part of the international attempts to cut food wastage, reduce waste, protect the environment and help the socially disadvantaged.
