Slovakia's firefighters and emergency corps (HaZZ) were alerted 33,737 times in 2017, the second highest number since 2002, HaZZ chief Alexander Nejedly told a press conference on Thursday. "The figures are not positive, as we recorded an increase in almost all areas," said the HaZZ head, adding that in the incidents last year 6,692 people were injured and another 739 were killed. Conversely, HaZZ members managed to rescue 14,910 people, an increase of almost 2,000 individuals compared to 2016.
