Sirens sounded for a minute in Warsaw at noon on Thursday to mark the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and to honour its victims. The main state observances got under way at Warsaw's Ghetto Heroes Memorial at noon, with President Andrzej Duda and other officials in attendance. An evening concert by the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra will also take place next to the Memorial. Its programme will include the fourth Movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which in 1942 was secretly rehearsed by the Warsaw ghetto's Jewish Symphony Orchestra despite a German ban on non-Jewish musicians.
