During a Thursday meeting of EU environment ministers in Brussels, Poland suggested that free CO2 allowances for the aviation sector under the EU emissions trading system (ETS) should be scrapped. According to the European Environment Agency, the aviation sector is the only one included in the EU emissions trading system whose emissions have been growing year by year. While at the same time, it has been receiving more free allocations. For example, free allocations to the aviation sector in 2019 were worth about EUR 800 million.
