Twenty new investments worth over PLN 2.2 billion (EUR 552 million) were acquired by the Katowice Special Economic Zone during the first half of 2019. According to the zone management the projects will generate 780 new jobs, and maintain a further 2,600 existing job posts. Janusz Michalek, the zone's CEO, expects that the total value of investments acquired this year will exceed last year's level of PLN 2.5 billion (EUR 590 million). During the first half of 2019, the zone gained a key investor - SK Innovation, a South Korean company which plans to invest over PLN 1 billion (EUR 240 million) in the production of Lithium ion battery separators. SK Innovation "one of the branch's biggest player on the world market, for the first time decided to invest in Europe," said Michalek adding that the project may attract companies cooperating with the Korean producer. The Katowice Special Economic Zone, founded over 20 years ago, is a leader among Polish special economic zones.
