Slovak President Andrej Kiska and European Commissioner for Justice, Consumer Protection and Gender Equality Vera Jourova discussed the Roma issue at a meeting in Kosice on Friday. According to Kiska, the primary solution to the problem is education with the possible inclusion of mandatory pre-school preparation. Kiska pointed to problems related to non-attendance at nursery school, which results in a poor command of the Slovak language and insufficient adaptation to hygiene habits in the early stages of primary school education. He also mentioned numerous transfers of Roma children to special needs schools and the fact that Roma children are not admitted to secondary schools or fail to complete their studies there.
