Hundreds of Czech teachers wear black to protest against state of education

March 28th, 2019

Hundreds of Czech teachers went to work dressed in black or with a black armband to protest against the state of the education system on the occasion of Teachers Day on Thursday, with some 40 schools and further 560 teachers participating according to the Czech Chamber of Teachers' Facebook survey. There are some 158,000 teachers in nurseries, primary, secondary and vocational schools in the Czech Republic. The teachers want to show their disapproval of the financing of education and various measures of the Education Ministry. The representatives of the Chamber of Teachers and the Teacher's Platform association which supported the event say the Czech education system is critically underfinanced and the teachers' work undervalued.
