Twelve Greenpeace activists on Wednesday morning climbed a mining tower of the Novaky Mine (Trencin region) to protest against what they described as "destructive" and "ineffective" coal mining in the area. Economy Minister Peter Ziga (Smer-SD) recently announced that the government's plan of subsidising electricity production from brown coal until 2030 should be shortened to end in 2023, with Greenpeace now saying that this could also be an appropriate date for scrapping "energy-coal mining" in Slovakia altogether.
