Even though the first US F-16 fighter jets will arrive Slovakia in 2022, the defence ministry wants to select the first pilots for training in the US as early as in 2019, Defence Minister Peter Gajdos (SNS) has told TASR. "Based on our selection we'll gradually send the best and most successful pilots to the USA, where they'll be trained, including language training," said Gajdos, adding that in line with the contract, the US will "produce ready-made pilots who when the jets are handed over in 2022/23 will be able to provide a standby system and airspace protection, i.e. meeting so-called NATINAMDS and Renegade commitments".
