It seems to be a "new Slovak national sport" to deny historical facts and pursue alternative explanations, but credit must be given to both the Red Army and the partisans who took part in the liberation of Slovakia in the second world war, former prime minister and still leader of the main ruling party Smer-SD Robert Fico wrote on social media on Wednesday, a public holiday commemorating the 1944 Slovak National Uprising (SNP). "Let's not be ashamed of saying that Slovakia was liberated by the Red Army, which paid with 60,000 lives for this. Let's not be ashamed to say that apart from the uprising army, almost 20,000 partisans also made their mark in the SNP, and the fact that they stuck to the resistance even after the uprising was suppressed [within two months] is still worthy of admiration," Fico wrote.
