May 9th, 2018
Europe Day, also called Schuman Day, in commemoration of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which gave birth to what eventually became the European Union, was celebrated on Bratislava's Main Square on Wednesday, featuring cultural performances and quizzes in Slovak and other European languages. "May 9 is a common festival for Slovaks and all Europeans. It reminds us, only the day after the day of victory in WWII, what happened in 1950, when Mr. Schuman came up with a declaration that proposed an end once and for all to age-old rivalry that had led to so many wars, and to create a new model of Europe - a model based on peace, cooperation and good life," said Ladislav Miko, head of the European Commission's Representation in Slovakia.
