The zoo in Bosovice, which specialises in breeding parrots, has newly acquired emerald parakeets, becoming the only zoological garden in Europe to keep this rare South American species, its director Hana Skrhakova told CTK today. The zoo has gained the birds from private breeders. The emerald parakeet, also known as the austral parakeet, is the southernmost living parrot species, which inhabits the severe area of the Ands with short summers that are cold, even with snowfalls. They are up to 30 centimetres tall.
