In its ability to secure equal opportunities for men and women, the Czech Republic is below the European Union's average, ending up 21st out of the 28 member countries, according to the Gender Equality Index released by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) today. Government Human Rights Commissioner Helena Valkova said that the Czech Republic's placement in the Index proves that the country is not doing very well in terms of gender equality, adding that in her position of commissioner, she is actively trying to bring attention to the problem, but does not want to be an activist since she thinks over-zealous activism will not improve the situation.
