The Czech government recognised Juan Guaido as interim president of Venezuela at its meeting today, Interior Minister Jan Hamacek (Social Democrats, CSSD) has tweeted. The same step was taken by other EU countries earlier today. Guaido was sworn in amid mass demonstrations on January 23, after the parliament of Venezuela did not recognise the second presidential mandate of Nicolas Maduro since it arose from undemocratic elections. "The Czech government is expressing regret at the fact that no steps leading to free and democratic elections have been approved in Venezuela despite repeated appeals by the international community. That is why the Czech government recognises Juan Guaido as interim president who should lead Venezuela to free and democratic elections," the cabinet wrote in a press release.
