Czech parties to debate election rules amid epidemic at Tuesday meeting

July 23rd, 2020

Czech Interior Minister Jan Hamacek has convoked a meeting of parliamentary parties' representatives on Tuesday to debate possible changes to the election practice that would enable those quarantined over the coronavirus to cast their ballots in the autumn Senate and regional elections. Earlier this week, Hamacek said the current legislation prevents people with contagious diseases from taking part in elections. This met with a wave of criticism from opposition parties. In reaction to them, Hamacek established a work team to assess ways to enable the voting by those in quarantine. He said he expects the team to submit its first recommendations by the beginning of August.
