Constitutional change best for attorney independence in Czech Republic - top attorney

July 3rd, 2019

The independence of the state attorneys' offices would be best guaranteed if they were not part of the executive power by constitution, Czech Supreme State Attorney Pavel Zeman told journalists after discussing the new bill on state attorneys' offices with the senators. Former state attorney Miroslav Antl (for Social Democrats, CSSD), the head of the Senate constitutional and legal committee, said he would agree with such a constitutional change and Justice Minister Marie Benesova (ANO) also said she would support it. Zeman said the state attorneys' offices should be separated, similarly to the judiciary.
