Archeologists discover unique 2,000-year-old settlement in Poland

February 7th, 2019

Farming land complete with boundary strips, homesteads, buildings and even roads make up a completely intact ancient settlement from almost 2,000 years ago, discovered by archeologists in Bory Tucholskie, northern Poland. The discovery is unique in Europe. The Bory Tucholskie region is one of the least well-known areas in Poland in archeological terms. "When it comes to research, it was virgin territory," Mateusz Sosnowski, a PhD student at the Nicolaus Copernicus University's Institute of Archeology in Torun, told PAP. "It was a great surprise to discover there not only individual elements of a former settlement, but also its surroundings: the fields surrounding the buildings, homesteads and tracts connecting them," he said.
