Several dozens of activists from the Obraz - Animal Defenders association drew the public's attention to the life of caged hens by riding on jammed trams in Prague wearing hen eye masks and costumes. They ended their journey at the headquarters of the COOP retail group, which they said had not committed itself to limiting the purchase of eggs from battery cage farmed hens. The company's leadership has promised a meeting to the activists within three weeks' time, COOP's spokesman Lukas Nemcik said. According to Nemcik, some COOP's branches actually were the first stores in the country to have switched to selling eggs from cage-free production only. Meanwhile, the egg producers disapprove the protest as an act of coercion. The activists were clucking on the tram while handing out leaflets informing about the disadvantages of the life of caged laying hens.
