Slovakia's parliament on Thursday rejected a declaration submitted by independent lawmakers centred around ex-premier Peter Pellegrini, which concerned a referendum on a snap general election. In the declaration, the MPs underlined that political power comes from the public and that people have the right to rectify the decisions of politicians at any time, not only during standard general elections. With these arguments the independents wanted to initiate a snap general election. The declaration, among other matters, states that a referendum is a fully constitutional, democratic and legitimate tool for enforcing the will of the people.
