There are some 10,700 people living within 500 metres of legal landfills in Slovakia, while additional thousands are living less than 100 metres from large illegal landfills, according to an analysis drawn up by Environmental Policy Institute (IEP) analyst Martin Galis. According to Galis, thousands of illegal and 111 legally operated dumps exist in Slovakia. As many as 1,300 people have been living near the Cadca Podzavoz landfill (Zilina region) and 3,700 near the Kosice-Myslava one.
