Slovak ambassador on Slovakia - Hungary ties

June 26th, 2020

Slovakia's relationship with Hungary is extremely positive and "we're interested in maintaining it; at the same time, however, we're vigilant about the complexities of the Hungarian way of governing, even if we don't want to be; but this just doesn't depend on us anymore", Slovak Ambassador to Hungary Pavol Hamzik told Tablet TV in an interview on Friday. According to Hamzik, differences between the countries in the matters of freedom of the press and the position of the non-governmental sector can be felt. He also sees Hungary as a state that is strongly centralised in the management of culture, science and education. He considers solving these problems to be more important than constantly addressing the issue of national minorities. "This is not part of our policy. We're building a civil society here. For us, all citizens are equal and we don't judge them on the basis of ethnicity, but we respect ethnicity," he said.
