Salary freeze for judges, prosecutors unconstitutional, says union

January 7th, 2022

The freeze of salaries for judges and attorneys proposed by the government is at variance with the constitution and if pushed through in the state of legislative emergency, the regular legislative procedure would be breached, the Czech Prosecutors' Union (USZ) said in a statement on Friday. If the government approves the salary freeze, its action will be challenged in court, the union added. The new five-party majority coalition government of Together (Civic Democrats, ODS, Christian Democrats/KDU-CSL, TOP 09) and the Pirates/Mayors and Independents (STAN), headed by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, is set to deal with the draft amendment on the freezing of the salaries of politicians, judges and prosecutors on Tuesday.
